performance and corona, how to do it?

performance…? 

Everything is cancelled. Especially for small ensembles or solo singers, who love the small stages and concert halls, it is a sad year. So, singers we will have to re-invent ourselves. We shouldn’t focus on the impossiblities and cling tot he last straws to hold on to, but focus on new ways to describe our profession. But what is left to do, when everybody tells you that singing has become the most dangerous professions in the world and that you should really stop singing? After a year of home office, song writing, writing lyrics and arranging it is time to get those creative ideas out there! That’s why I’d like to support you all, professionals and amateurs, and give you a couple of possibilities.

First and foremost: Go out there! A virtual performance is also a performance. Get your laptop, bring your audio interface (an indispensable asset nowadays) and start recording your music. It creates a purpose and a goal to your routines and practise! 

Make your recordings accessible to others…. On Soundcloud or Youtube or any other platform. If you are not too sure about the quality but you’d like to get feedback from family, friends, teachers or other experts, put it there in “secret mode” so that you have full control over who can access your material. Most importantly: Make sure you will be heard! 

live or virtual?

Think about the possibilities to start a virtual ensemble. Maybe it is possible to record different tracks one after the other to build up your ensemble step-by-step. It will give you the feeling of being part of the ensemble, creating the feeling of being together, making music, after a very long time of solitude. Especially for choirs and orchestra this kind of ensemble building is a nice way to work “separately together”. 

Think about recording your own concert and present it to the world on a the streaming platform. Play live (in a venue of your choice, or at home) and give the audience the possibility to watch the show online. Make sure though, that you have an experienced technician to assist you. 

Sing or play live, as much as possible. Even when your audience are two people (because you sing a serenade on your neighbour’s front lawn or because you’re singing on a street corner) you will always encounter a thankful audience. It is worth the while. 

Finally, you could even think about hybrid performances… half streaming live performance, half pre-recorded items. It is a refreshingly new art form to experiment with. 

Of course all these digital ways to perform are not capable of replacing a full concert agenda. But it is a meaningful new perspective on the singers’ profession.
